WHAT ARE CAMPO METEORITES? Campo del Cielo is Spanish for "Field of Heaven" and it is an appropriate name. Campo meteorites fell from the sky into the province of Gran Chaco in Argentina long before the beginning of recorded history. First discovered in 1576, Campo del Cielo is one of the oldest known meteorite finds. Many more specimens have been uncovered, over the centuries, using modern metal detectors and hunting methods. Visit our Science and History of the Campo del Cielo Meteorite section to learn more. The Campo del Cielo iron is classified as a IAB coarse octahedrite. It exhibits many beautiful characteristics, unique to meteorites, including: Regmaglypts — thumbprint-like surface features caused by a meteorite melting during its fiery journey through Earth's atmosphere Orientation — a dome or shield-shaped aspect, also caused by melting during flight. However, oriented meteorites maintain a fixed and constant orientation while plummeting towards our planet. Fixed flight causes them to acquire a rounded shape reminiscent of the nose of the space shuttle, or the heat shield of a Mercury or Apollo space capsule. In fact, space ship engineers and designers study oriented meteorites to learn more about how materials behave during atmospheric re-entry. Oriented meteorites are very rare, and are prized by collectors. Natural holes — the only thing more desirable to the collector than an oriented meteorite is one with a natural hole. In some very rare instances, the heat of atmospheric travel causes a hole to literally burn right through a meteorite. These natural space sculptures are extremely rare and a very highly valued by enthusiasts and museums. We are proud to offer the world's best selection of Campo del Cielo irons with natural holes. Character — meteorites with pleasing aesthetic shapes are said to have "good character" and to be "sculptural." Sculptural meteorites are natural works of art forged by the elements and the power of physics. They are the remnants of long-dead worlds, and are genuine travelers from deep space. With a little care, a meteorite specimen will last many lifetimes, and will inspire and amaze all who see it! HOW MUCH
